AUGUST 2007

The 9-inch flood rain fell Saturday night, Aug 18. Now the West Fork is the Big Muddy. Avalanche is downstream of a leaking dam, so town people were evacuated. Up on the side hill, where my workshop & store and house are, we are dry. Behind the store is a new beach, courtesy of the flood. I've lost two foot bridges.

NBC called me on Monday, wanting to feature Avalanche's tribulations, but by then the water was going down, & we were mostly just standing around listening to the hum of everyone's sump pumps sumping basements.

Nothing like a good flood to bring all the neighbors together. We haven't been so agreeable to one another since the Dept of Transportation dropped the final"e" from the Avalanche town sign. Then, through our unified indignation, it was soon restored.

Go Avalanche--with an E!
