Avalanche Looms
Susan Johnson's
Workshop & Farm Store

Susan taught herself to weave in 1981, on a Norwegian immigrant-built barn loom she'd offered to store for a friend. With young children at home she began to weave Scandinavian design rag rugs & runners. Her Finnish and Swedish heritage has always been a source of inspiration for her, as well as an active imagination, and love for color, texture and design. She attributes her imagination, design sense, and pure love of making things to her heritage. Her rugs and linen weaves are sold only through her studio. The have attracted national attention, seen on the cover of Country Living Magazine, in House Beautiful, and featured in The Chicago Tribune magazine, as well as Fiber Arts Magazine, and Contemporary Design Rag Rugs, by Heather Allen.
Susan and her husband built a new weaving workshop and farm store in 2000, on their farm in Avalanche, Wisconsin. It's built on the site of the old barn foundation, in the former goose lot. The style of the building is a traditional Swedish plan, red and white. The barn and the geese are gone, and the workshop has a collection of antique and modern Scandinavian style floor looms. Besides selling her own weaving and graphic designs, she also sells a small collection of contemporary design products from other artists and designers whose work inspires her.
